Gabe's
Oasis to close, Watson to headline
last show
By Michael Swanger michael@dmcityview.com
The
sad news out of Iowa City for
music fans is that Gabe's Oasis,
330 East Washington St., the longtime
live music venue best known for
its eclectic mix of shows, is
closing after nearly 15 years.
The good news is there's still
time to catch a show before they
turn out the lights.
Gabe's will host its final show
on Tuesday - a performance by
Austin-based alt-country icon
Dale Watson. Tickets are $10.
It's a fitting ending to a club
whose DIY approach and street
credibility created a haven for
discerning music fans with tastes
that run deeper than mainstream,
commercial drivel.
Prior to Watson's concert, Gabe's
will host an all-ages show on
Sunday by Race to the Bottom,
Breakdance, Requiem and Murder
of Crows at 6 p.m. Later that
night, at 10 p.m., The Plastic
Constellations, FT (Shadow Government)
and Static Static will play. Admission
to each show is $5.
On Monday, the club will host
a showcase of Iowa City bands
including Deathships, The Diplomats
of Solid Sound, The Bent Sceptors,
Rusty Buckets, Baron
Von Ottomatic, Andy Caffrey, Great
Lakes and Boo Hiss at 7 p.m. Admission
is $5.
Gabe's, which is now under new
management, will become The Picador
following the last show. Call
(319) 354-4788.
