Dispatcher: 911...
Caller: Hi this is... Caporale's
on Sixth Avenue. Do you have a
car that's in the neighborhood
that could swing through? We've
got a couple people out in the
lot that don't want to leave.
We put them out earlier, just
for fighting.
D: Are they fighting now?
C: No, but they're yelling and
screaming and not leaving the
lot...
D: What part of the lot are they
in?
C: Right in front of the front
door here... Sometimes just a
drive-by from the cops will clear
out the lot...
D: Males, females or what?
C: Three males, two females.
D: Hispanic or white, or?
C: Yeah, Hispanic.
D: How many females?
C: Two. But the females are calm;
it's the males...
D: They are yelling at customers,
or what are they doing, sir?
C: Um, they're yelling at the
owner, and causing kind of an
[to third party:] Easy, easy,
easy...
D: Who are you talking to?
C: One of my guys behind me;
one of my security guys...
D: We're sending officers over
there.
C: Thanks, hon.
D: If it escalates, give us a
call back.
C: Oh I will. Thank You.
Officer's Report: Dispatched
[to a] dispute at [Los] Caporale's
Night Club... Upon arrival, Caporales
security pointed out a male and
female. I approached the subjects,
and the female, later identified
as Lorena Alvarado, had hold of
a male, later identified as Oscar
Flores. She was pulling him by
the arm and he was resisting her,
trying to go back towards the
front door and Caporale's security
personnel. [Caporale's] security
supervisor... said the male had
assaulted one of his security
officers. I instructed Alvarado
to stop trying to pull Flores
away so I could talk to him. She
did not stop... She was screaming
loudly and was out of control.
Both suspects were clearly highly
intoxicated and aggravated. Alvarado
let go of Flores and I began to
place handcuffs on him, when Alvarado
began to push me and attempt to
get in between me and Flores.
I moved away from her and walked
him to my patrol car. Alvarado
followed and again started pushing
me and striking me with her body,
in an attempt to free Flores from
my control. I was forced to control
both suspects with one arm on
each until security officers stepped
in, and Sgt. Charleston took Alvarado
into custody. At that point, I
was able to secure handcuffs on
Flores. I instructed Flores to
get into the rear seat of my vehicle
and he refused. I had to physically
push him into the vehicle. [A
Caporale's] security officer...
said Flores punched him in the
back and chest while [he] was
trying to evict Flores from the
bar. Alvarado and Flores were
arrested... and transported to
the jail.
Docket diving
Sandra Leckington's troubles
began when she bought her 18-year-old
son a half-gallon of vodka - a
gift to help him celebrate his
impending probation - and culminated
in the near-death of a 13-year-old
boy in her care. Last week, the
Iowa Supreme Court refused to
overturn the Scott County woman's
resulting convictions of child
neglect and endangerment.
On December 23, a friend of the
family, Dominic Major, called
Sandra to tell her that her 12-year-old
son, Shawn, and his 13-year-old
friend, Travis, had been drinking
at Major's apartment. The alcohol
they'd found was the leftover
vodka Sandra had purchased for
her 18-year-old to celebrate his
probation. Major demanded that
Sandra come pick up the boys from
his apartment, as Travis was "pretty
trashed," he told her.
According to court records, Sandra
picked up her husband, Mark Leckington,
on the way to the apartment. When
the couple arrived, Travis, a
seventh-grader, was so intoxicated
he could not walk. Major carried
the boy to the car; once inside,
Travis slumped in the backseat.
Sandra lied to her husband, even
though she "knew of Travis'
condition when she picked him
up," and told him the boys
hadn't been drinking. Shawn told
Mark that Travis had 'hit his
head' while "wrestling around
in the apartment."
Sandra then dropped off the kids
at the Leckington home, and left
with Mark to run errands. Once
inside the house, Travis fell
unconscious. Shawn enlisted the
help of other neighborhood boys,
who carried Travis to the bathtub
and doused him with cold water,
which failed to revive him, and
he began to foam at the mouth.
When Sandra returned an hour later,
the boys told her they thought
Travis was dead. According to
one boy, Sandra "freaked
out" and said, "You
know how much trouble I'm going
to get into, this little fucker
had to drink alcohol, I'm not
going to jail for this motherfucking
bastard." Sandra tried to
convince the boys to help her
drag Travis out of the house -
ostensibly so she wouldn't be
prosecuted if something happened
- but they refused. After what
court documents describe as an
"inexplicable delay,"
Sandra told her husband about
Travis' condition, and he instructed
her to phone Travis' mother, who
told Sandra to call 911.
When paramedics arrived, Travis
had a weak pulse, his mouth was
clenched shut and his skin was
blue. The boy was rushed to the
hospital via helicopter, where
he lay in a coma for 14 days.
Doctors determined his blood alcohol
content to be .3.
Both Sandra and Mark were convicted
of child endangerment and neglect,
and sentenced to 20 years in prison;
Sandra was additionally charged
with providing alcohol to a minor.
Both parties appealed their convictions,
and Mark's was overturned; the
court found that his role in the
matter was "peripheral."
The court upheld Sandra's conviction,
however, arguing that there was
"abundant evidence to prove
Sandra knew Travis was severely
intoxicated."
Wrote Justice Michael Streit:
"A mother made some horrible
decisions concerning her son's
drunken friend, almost costing
him his life."

Fike was charged with second degree
robbery.
Life is the pits...
...literally, if you're Douglas
C. Kolarik, who sued Tee Pee Olives
for the broken tooth he received
from biting into "an olive
containing a pit." According
to court documents, Kolarik claimed
he was expecting only the "minced
pimento stuffed" olives advertised
on the jar. Tee Pee responded
that the fated pit was "naturally
occurring in the olive and was
not a foreign substance,"
and therefore, the company wasn't
liable for Kolarik's dental damage.
A district court in Johnson County
tossed out the case, but Kolarik
is appealing the decision.

her boyfriend in the face when
he came to the door. They threw
a rock through the front window
and entered the house. One of
the males punched the female victim

Escalade and another unknown SUV.
An area check for the suspect
