The Beauty Shop
9 p.m.
Vaudeville Mews
The Beauty Shop is a Champaign-Urbana,
Ill.-based trio that performs
acoustic rock with Americana twang,
pontificating on (perhaps ironically,
given the band name) such bleak
topics as doomed relationships,
dysfunctional and fatally flawed
people and perpetual boredom.
The band - made up of singer-songwriter
John Joeffleur, bassist Ariane
Perala and drummer Casey Smith
- creates beguilingly simple tunes,
as Hoeffleur's baritone delivers
what All Music refers to as "wicked
deadpan drawls." See The
Beauty Shop tonight at the Vaudeville
Mews as it performs with opener
Hootis. Cost is $5 day of show.

"Survivor" Open Casting
Call
9 a.m. to noon
Prairie Meadows
Think you've got what it takes
to survive in a remote location
cut off from all luxuries, fending
for yourself when it comes to
food and shelter, doing physical
and mental challenges on little
sleep and less food, and having
to withstand your annoying teammates?
If so, then attend a "Survivor"
Open Casting Call at Prairie Meadows
today. Those who wish to audition
will have two minutes during a
taped audition process to convince
the show's producers that he or
she is the next Survivor. The
auditions will be done on a first-come,
first-served basis, so show up
early and have your shtick prepared.
And hey, you really don't even
have to be good looking, despite
your having to wear next to nothing
for the duration. Remember Richard
Hatch? Call 247-8849 for application
information.

Feist
8 p.m.
Maintenance Shop
Feist is really Leslie Feist,
who opts to go simply by her surname
for this musical project. But
this isn't her first. The songstress
started playing in a high school
punk band called Placebo that,
after winning a battle of the
bands contest, played its first
gig opening for The Ramones. And
even after being told she'd never
sing again due to the amount of
strain she put on her voice while
touring across Canada, Feist pressed
on, playing guitar for By Divine
Right. In 1999, she put out her
first solo album, sang on a Peaches
album in 2000, and joined indie
band Broken Social Scene for their
2002 critically acclaimed album
"You Forgot it in People."
Leslie Feist's solo performance
at the Maintenance Shop in the
Iowa State Memorial Union was
originally scheduled for Tuesday.
However, this up-and-coming performer
was invited to play David Letterman
with Broken Social Scene, so the
show was moved up a day. See this
show on its new night. Tickets
for Feist are $12-$16.

Reading of "Talk Radio"
7 p.m.
Noodle Zoo East Village
The Scriptease series has proven
an effective vehicle for StageWest
in that it has allowed scripts
to be tested on audiences before
the local theater company produces
a full-fledged staging of it.
This time around, StageWest will
be hosting a reading of Eric Bogosian's
"Talk Radio," directed
by Andy Elliott of KJJY and featuring
Maxwell Schaeffer, morning radio
personality on KIOA. In "Talk
Radio," a rude, contemptuous
talk show host becomes overwhelmed
by the hatred that surrounds his
program just before it goes national.
See it tonight at the Noodle Zoo
in the East Village. For more
information, visit www.stagewestiowa.com.

the voices these women heard on
the day they gave birth. Performances
will be at the Noodle Zoo in the
East Village Feb 1, 7-9 and 14-16
at 7 p.m. The playwright will
also be on hand for post-performance
discussions following tonight's

open at 5:30 p.m. for food and
beverage service. Tickets are
