Hey. Hey you. You could use some culture, and
the Civic Music Association is here to see that
you get it. The Berlin Quartet — consisting
of violinists Julie Fox Henson, John Helmich
and Tracy Engman Finkelshteyn, violist Sherida
Josephson and cellist George Work — will play
a series of free lunch time concerts starting
at noon in various locations throughout the
summer. First on the list: the Schumann Quartet
op. 41 no.1 in A minor on Friday, May 25 at
12:15 p.m. in Nolan Plaza.
Music in the Junction has kicked off for the
year in (surprise!) Valley Junction. Every Thursday
through September, the Junction plays host to
a free concert from 6 – 8:30 p.m. This Thursday,
May 17, It’s Complicated takes their turn.
Let’s give hearty congratulations to this year’s
Iowa Blues Challenge finalists: The Pain Killers,
Serious Business, and The Mississippi Misfits.
Next up, the three bands will play for the judges
(and you fine people) on Saturday, May 26. First
set begins at 8:30 p.m., and the cover charge
is $10.
The good folks at Ankeny Unplugged have announced
the lineup for their June festival series. The
festival is a family-friendly event, with tickets
for all the shows running $3 at the door, and
kids 12 and under getting in for free. Shows
run from 4 to 9 p.m. and will feature the following:
Saturday, June 2 — Parlours with Death Ships,
Hanwell and Milk & Eggs; Saturday, June
9 — Caroline Smith with The Sudden Lovelys,
Elizabeth Arynn and The Hose Country; Saturday,
June 16 — Fierce Bad Rabbit with The Brothers
Burn Mountain, MINT and James Biehn; and Saturday,
June 23 — Christopher the Conquered with Jordan
Mayland and the Thermal Detonators, The New
Bodies and The Poison Control Center’s Patrick
Tape Fleming.
On Saturday, May 19, House of Bricks plays host
to an all-ages benefit show for the Iowa Reptile
Rescue. Acts include Silent Skyline, Shatter,
This Sudden Darkness and In Troubled Times.
Show kicks off at 5 p.m. and tickets are $12.
The Gaslamp scratches that nagging reggae itch
you know you’ve got on Monday, May 21, with
The Aggrolites, Hub City Stompers, Old Man Markley,
Brothers of Brazi, and DJ 810. Tickets are $15
in advance through ticketfly, or $20 at the
door.
Finally, SoundNotes’ Pick o’ the Week is on
Tuesday, May 22. Fetal Pig headlines an all-ages
show at the Vaudeville Mews, starting at 5:30
p.m. Tickets are $5, and the opening acts include
Dhobi Fats, The Seed of Something and Smokin
Weazles, which features 11-year-old local rockers
Jeffrey McDonald (drums) and Quentin Valadez
