Hey. Hey you. You could use some culture, and the Civic Music Association is here to see that you get it. The Berlin Quartet — consisting of violinists Julie Fox Henson, John Helmich and Tracy Engman Finkelshteyn, violist Sherida Josephson and cellist George Work — will play a series of free lunch time concerts starting at noon in various locations throughout the summer. First on the list: the Schumann Quartet op. 41 no.1 in A minor on Friday, May 25 at 12:15 p.m. in Nolan Plaza.

Music in the Junction has kicked off for the year in (surprise!) Valley Junction. Every Thursday through September, the Junction plays host to a free concert from 6 – 8:30 p.m. This Thursday, May 17, It’s Complicated takes their turn.

Let’s give hearty congratulations to this year’s Iowa Blues Challenge finalists: The Pain Killers, Serious Business, and The Mississippi Misfits. Next up, the three bands will play for the judges (and you fine people) on Saturday, May 26. First set begins at 8:30 p.m., and the cover charge is $10.

The good folks at Ankeny Unplugged have announced the lineup for their June festival series. The festival is a family-friendly event, with tickets for all the shows running $3 at the door, and kids 12 and under getting in for free. Shows run from 4 to 9 p.m. and will feature the following: Saturday, June 2 — Parlours with Death Ships, Hanwell and Milk & Eggs; Saturday, June 9 — Caroline Smith with The Sudden Lovelys, Elizabeth Arynn and The Hose Country; Saturday, June 16 — Fierce Bad Rabbit with The Brothers Burn Mountain, MINT and James Biehn; and Saturday, June 23 — Christopher the Conquered with Jordan Mayland and the Thermal Detonators, The New Bodies and The Poison Control Center’s Patrick Tape Fleming.

On Saturday, May 19, House of Bricks plays host to an all-ages benefit show for the Iowa Reptile Rescue. Acts include Silent Skyline, Shatter, This Sudden Darkness and In Troubled Times. Show kicks off at 5 p.m. and tickets are $12.

The Gaslamp scratches that nagging reggae itch you know you’ve got on Monday, May 21, with The Aggrolites, Hub City Stompers, Old Man Markley, Brothers of Brazi, and DJ 810. Tickets are $15 in advance through ticketfly, or $20 at the door.

Finally, SoundNotes’ Pick o’ the Week is on Tuesday, May 22. Fetal Pig headlines an all-ages show at the Vaudeville Mews, starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $5, and the opening acts include Dhobi Fats, The Seed of Something and Smokin Weazles, which features 11-year-old local rockers Jeffrey McDonald (drums) and Quentin Valadez (bass).
