Are you lucky enough?

By Shane Goodman Publisher/Editor

A common Irish saying goes like this: The Irish ignore anything they can’t drink or punch. There may be more truth to that than even this stubborn Irishman will admit, but I have two tamer interests that come to light this time of year. The first is the celebration of all things Irish, and the second is a parade.

As my Irish mother often says, we have more Irish blood in us than Carter has liver pills — whatever that means. After looking at my pasty-white skin, my pug nose and my 5’9” frame, it doesn’t take people long to guess my heritage. And once you meet my red-headed mother and her siblings, there is no doubt.

There is also no doubt that the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick puts on one of the best parades of the year. More than 130,000 people simply can’t be wrong. Maybe the success of the parade and the related parties each year is due to good timing or great weather, or maybe it’s just plain luck. But as another Irish saying goes: If you are lucky enough to be Irish, then you are lucky enough.

Thanks for reading. CV
