3XW makes history

For the first time in more than 25 years, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) Heavyweight Championship — professional wrestling’s most historic title — will be defended in Des Moines in the main event of 3XW’s Divide & Conquer 2 on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Baratta’s@Forte Center inside All Play, 615 3rd St. Current NWA title holder “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce will face “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt, one of the best wrestlers in the Midwest. This will be the first defense of this championship in Des Moines since “Nature Boy” Ric Flair battled “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes in 1986. Along with the title bout, a number of other matches will take place throughout the night. Doors open at 7 p.m. (6:45 p.m. for advance ticket holders) with a 7:30 p.m. start time. Advance tickets are $12 and $6 for kids 10 and under (free for kids 3 and under). Tickets at the door are $15. For more information, visit http://www.3XWrestling.com.

H.P. Lovecraft Film Fest and Art Exhibit

Finder’s Creepers, 515 18th St., is hosting an evening dedicated to the infamous H.P. Lovecraft on Saturday, Jan. 28. The event will featuring screenings of six independent movies as well as an art exhibit featuring more than 10 artists paying homage to the celebrated author. Bryan Moore of Arkham Studios will be hosting this evening’s festivities as well as screening his own Lovecraft film, “Cool Air.” Admission is a suggested donation of $10. The High Life Lounge, 200 S.W. 2nd St., will hold its eighth annual Groundhog Day Celebration on Thursday, Feb. 2 starting a 6 a.m. From 6 to 8 a.m., attendees can enjoy free Miller High Life, and at 7:30 a.m., Polk County Paula will offer her annual prediction. Breakfast specials will be served until 11 a.m., and High Life drink specials will be featured all day. This year will also feature a Woodchuck Bike Ride, which will take place after Polk County Paula’s prediction, heading to the newly remolded Library Café, 3506 University Ave. No registration is needed for the ride, and there will be giveaways from Woodchuck Cider.
