Good, Bad & The Ugly

Jan 26, 2012

The good

Planned Parenthood applauds the decision by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to ensure access to affordable birth control. This decision protects access to affordable birth control for millions of women, regardless of religious affiliations. “Birth control is not just basic health care for women, it is an economic concern,” said Planned Parenthood of the Heartland President and CEO Jill June. “This commonsense decision means that millions of women, who would otherwise pay $15 to $50 a month, will have access to affordable birth control, helping them save hundreds of dollars each year.” Planned Parenthood believes all women should be able to access the birth control coverage benefit and opposes the current provision that allows religious employers like hospitals, churches and church associations, to deny this benefit to their employees.

The bad

Don’t burn this guy’s biscuits. Illinois resident Harry Woods III, 43, was arrested last week after he attacked his son over a batch of biscuits. According to police, Wood’s daughter placed the biscuits in the oven and told family members to keep an eye on them as she left. Nobody paid attention, and when Woods discovered the biscuits had burned he became enraged, breaking a plate over his son’s head and biting him. The son told his father he would make more, but Woods grabbed a meat cleaver, held it to his son’s throat and threatened to kill him. Woods was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery.

Customers at a McDonald’s in Los Angeles were apparently offered more than super sizing last week. Khadijah Baseer, 31, was arrested after she offered sexual favors to numerous McDonald’s customers. According to police, numerous witnesses stated that Baseer approached several vehicles in the drive-thru offering sex for food, specifically chicken nuggets. After she approached numerous customers, the manager told her to leave the restaurant, but she refused. Police arrested Baseer, and she was charged with loitering and suspension of prostitution. No “happy endings” with this Happy Meal.

The ugly

Some people should not be fathers. Florida resident John Nickoles Mulherin, 35, was arrested last week after he beat his pregnant girlfriend so badly she suffered from blackouts and a ruptured spleen. According to police, Mulherin and his girlfriend were arguing when he kicked her, punched her then pushed her out the door onto the front porch where she vomited and blacked out. Then, Mulherin beat her for throwing up. He forced her into the car, and while driving, she blacked out again and crashed the car. Mulherin then grabbed her by her hair and drug her out of the vehicle. Mulherin drove her home, and the woman blacked out again. Mulherin picked her up and slammed her head against the wall several times. She was later taken to the hospital where she was treated for a ruptured spleen. Mulherin was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery on a pregnant female and two counts of child abuse.

Whatever happened to a good, old-fashioned drink in the face? A Waterloo woman is in jail after police say she stabbed a man in the eye with a two-pronged cooking fork. Darlene Oden, 57, is charged with willful injury and going armed with intent. Police say she stabbed 49-year-old Wesley Polk, of Waterloo, last week. Polk was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for surgery. Oden is being held in the Black Hawk County jail.CV
