The 2012 Iowa Home Show returns to the Iowa
State Fairgrounds Varied Industries Building
Friday, Jan. 13 through Sunday, Jan. 15. Admission
is $6.95 for adults, $5.95 for seniors (62+)
and kids under 12 are free. Hours are 4 to 8
p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday
and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Along with
the numerous vendors offering all of your home
needs, attendees will also be able to get free
antique appraising, see a performance by the
ISU cheerleaders, attend a seminar by The Mushroom
King and have the chance to meet Gator Queen
Liz from the history channel’s “Swamp People,”
who will be speaking about the quarter-sized
kill spot on a gator’s head and working with
fellow gator hunter Troy Landry. For more information,

The Des Moines Boat, Sports and Travel Show
will take over Hy-Vee Hall on Friday Jan. 13
through Sunday, Jan. 15. During the show, attendees
will be able to find a wide selection of the
latest hunting, fishing and travel gear as well
as enjoy numerous attractions including The
Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, The Great American
Duck Race, the Cold Stream Trout Tank &
Fishing Simulator, Team Morel and the Aussie
Kingdom. The Des Moines Boat, Sports and Travel
Show is one of only four venues where the Great
Smokey Mountain Lumberjack Show can be seen
outside of Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Hours are 5 to
9 p.m. on Friday (Preview Night), 9 a.m. to
9 p.m. on Saturday (Kids Day) and 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. on Sunday (Family Day). Admission is
$9 for adults, $5 for kids ages 5-18 and free

Celebrate MLK Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is upon us, and
all are welcome to attend a celebration in honor
of the revered Civil Rights activist at Grand
View University’s Viking Theatre in the Student
Center at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 15. Keynote speaker
Dr. Linda Lane will be there to discuss the
legacy of Dr. King and to help attendees reflect
on this holiday. She will be delivering her
message to the Grand View community. For more
