The joy of a toy
We know, it’s the thought that counts. And,
yes, it is better to give than to receive. Peace
on Earth. Good will toward men. Blah. Blah.
Blah.
All those things sound merrier than a drunken
elf, but whether you like it or not, most childhood
Christmas memories center around one thing —
the gifts.
It didn’t matter if your family was rich or
poor, whether you were raised with two parents
or one, or if you celebrated the birth of Jesus
or not, the most exciting part of the holiday
season for a kid was waking up Christmas morning,
tearing up wrapping paper and seeing what the
guy in the big, red suit brought you. It may
not have been the Tyco Slot Car Racing Set or
the Easy Bake Oven that you circled in the Montgomery
Ward catalog, but it really didn’t matter. Years
later you come to realize that all those corny
adages were really true. The gifts really weren’t
so important, but the spirit of Christmas they
brought into your home was. Today, those toys
are long gone, but the memories of them last
a lifetime.
