The Nutcracker returns

Ballet Des Moines is proud to present “The Nutcracker” this holiday season, Dec. 9-11 at Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Ave. The show features more than 200 local dancers and guest performers by professional dancers from the Cincinnati and Colorado ballet companies. Breakfast with Santa

The 6th Annual “Breakfast with Santa” event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust St. A kid-friendly breakfast from Cafe Baratta’s will be served, and families can participate in “Sing-Along Santa Songs” with musician Frank Strong. Santa and Mrs. Claus will join the families and read holiday stories to children. Children can also get their photo taken with Santa in front of a holiday scene including a large, lighted tree and Gingerbread House. The Elves’ Workshop will be open for children to make gifts for friends or family and with the Younkers Tea Room tradition, children will receive a special gift when they leave. Admission is $15 (12 and older) and $12 (ages 11 and under), with free admission for kids 2 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the State historical Building or at http://www.midwestix.com. Show off dance skills

The Iowa Barnstormers will be holding tryouts for their 2012 dance squad, “The Storm Chasers,” on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Best Western Ballroom, 1810 Army Post Road. Christmas Chaos

Impact Pro Wrestling (IPW) takes over the Val Air Ballroom, 301 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, on Sunday, Dec. 11, with “Christmas Chaos.” After 10 years of promoting family-friendly wrestling in the Midwest, IPW finally makes its debut in the metro. WWE hall-of-famer “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan will be in action along with IPW Heavyweight Champion Nicky Free, James Jeffries and Tony Sly. Local 3XWrestlers “Delicious” Devin Carter, “The Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell and “The Canadian Sex Icon” Ryan Slade will also be in action.
