’30 Minutes or Less’

Directed by Ruben Fleischer

Rated R, 83 minutes

Filled with plenty of laughs and great action, “30 Minutes or Less” should have been a huge hit, but after a summer of crappy comedies, audiences forgot about it. That’s alright though, “30 Minutes or Less” is the perfect film to watch at home, allowing audiences to intoxicate themselves with laughter thanks to Danny McBride, Nick Swardson and Aziz Ansari. The story follows Nick (Jesse Eisenberg), a pizza delivery guy who crosses paths with Dwayne (McBride) and Travis (Swardson), who are scheming a way to get lottery money from Dwayne’s dad before he spends it. They hire a hitman (Michael Pena) to take him out, but they need money to pay him. So they order a pizza and strap a bomb to Nick’s chest, forcing him to rob a bank so they can pay the killer. “30 Minutes or Less” is laugh-out-loud funny and should be recognized as one of the funniest films of the year. ‘Straight Time’

Directed by Ulu Grosbard

1978, Rated R, 114 minutes

Based on the novel by Edward Bunker (“Reservoir Dogs”), “Straight Time” is a gritty heist film about a criminal (Dustin Hoffman) trying to turn his life around. Max is a struggling ex-con who is released from jail and is sent to sadistic parole officer Earl Frank (M. Emmet Walsh). Looking to nail him at any moment, Max must walk a fine line and starts to get his life together after meeting Jenny (Theresa Russell). But when Frank finds drug paraphernalia — which belonged to Max’s friend Willy (Gary Busey) — in his apartment, he takes him in. But Max crashes the car and chains Frank to the side of the road, stripping him down to his underwear. From there he begins a crime spree with an old partner (Harry Dean Stanton) before fleeing the city. Not only does “Straight Time” feature some intense criminal activity, it’s also one of Hoffman’s greatest performances. CV
