Iowa folk singers Bonita Crowe and Chad Elliott perform Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. and Kansas City blues artist Mary Bridget Davies ($12) plays Friday, Oct. 14 at 9:30 p.m. at The Gas Lamp.

People’s Court hosts Brett Dennen with Blind Pilot (Thursday, Oct. 13, 8 p.m., $18), Yellowcard (Monday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m., $20), Yelawolf with DJ Craze & Rittz (Tuesday, Oct. 18, 8 p.m., $16) and Big Gigantic (Wednesday, Oct. 19, 9 p.m., $13). Tickets are available through Ticketfly.

The Lighthouse Concert Series at West Des Moines Christian Church hosts the Bill Riley Talent Competition ($5) in which entertainers will vie for the opportunity to perform at the Iowa State Fair. Showtime is 7 p.m.

Fresh Breath’s “The Revival” ($5) plays Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., featuring music, spoken word and dance. Proceeds benefit the Bethel Mission Shelter Iowa AIDS Project Pantry. Also, metal bands Immolation, Jungle Riot, Gigan, Primal Breath and Astral Space ($15) play the Mews on Monday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m.

The Civic Music Association hosts the Emerson Quartet on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Drake University’s Sheslow Auditorium. Tickets are $5 (student rush) to $45 through Midwestix.

The newly formed Andy Anderson Band, a local pop-soul group, plays its debut show on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ingersoll Theater. Admission is $5.

Blues legend Buddy Guy, with opening acts Matt Woods and The Thunderbolts and Mint, performs Saturday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. at 7 Flags Event Center. Tickets are $35 and $50 through

Colorado-based acoustic duo Strangebyrds performs Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at Anchor Coffee House. Tickets are $10.

The Laurie Berkner Band plays a matinee show on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. at Hoyt Sherman Theater. Tickets are $35 at Ticketmaster.

Mac Miller’s concert at the Val Air Ballroom on Wednesday, Oct. 19 is sold out.

The local Synergy Jazz Foundation has announced its 2011-2012 workshop and concert series. Each event includes “informances” for kids, an adult workshop, jam session and concerts with the Sam Salomone Trio and Des Moines Big Band. The lineup includes Jack Wilkins (Nov. 11-14), Ariel Alexander (Dec. 16-19), Justin Kisor (Jan. 21-23), Pat Harbison (Feb. 10-13), Corey Christiansen (March 9-12) and Tim Coffman (April 13-16). Drummer Bobby Parker, 92, who played with several local and national jazz artists and is a member of the Greater Des Moines Community Jazz Center Hall of Fame, died Sept. 30. The CJC will honor him at its Hall of Fame ceremony on Oct. 23.
