Gallery night

Valley Junction will hold its 16th annual Fall Gallery Night on Friday, Oct. 14, from 5 to 9 p.m. Eleven galleries will showcase new work including original artwork, custom jewelry, ceramics, glass, furniture, folk art and fine art reproductions from regional, national and international artists. Get ready to laugh

Loosen up your funny bone because the Best of the Midwest Comedy Showcase takes over the Stoner Theater, 221 Walnut St., on Friday, Oct. 14. Returning for its second year, this will be one of the biggest festivals in the Midwest. Twelve comedians — including Johnny Beehner, Brent Terhune, William Krolowitz, Adam Grabowski, Jeff Caudill, Mike Maxwell, Spencer Dobson, Marc Von Ahnen, Josh di Donato, Erik Monical, Jerad Cherniss and JD Provorse — will yuck it up for a chance to be named Best of the Midwest. Mid Iowa Rollers finish up season

The Mid Iowa Rollers will host their final bout of the 2011 season against the ICT RollerGirls on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Skate South, 1054 County Line Road. A tailgating party featuring a meet and greet with the team, a bounce house, food and beer starts at 5:30 p.m., with the bout starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 in advance or $10 at the door (kids 12 and under are free), with part of the proceeds benefiting Easter Seals. The queen of children’s music

Orchard Place, Iowa’s leading provider of services to children and youth with emotional and behavioral challenges, will be hosting The Laura Berkner Band at Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Ave., on Sunday, Oct. 16, starting at 3 p.m. People Magazine has praised the Laurie Berkner Band, calling her “the queen of children’s music.” This will be her first time performing in Des Moines.
