The Maximum Ames Music Festival, to be held Thursday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 25, will include performances by approximately 60 (mostly Iowa) bands at indoor and outdoor venues throughout Ames. The Mountain Goats, Xiu Xiu and Euforquestra are among the headliners. Admission to many shows is free, though festival passes sell for $20-$40. Visit http://www.maximumames.com.

Midwestix is now providing ticketing for events at the Iowa State Memorial Union and Maintenance Shop.

Gordon Lightfoot performs at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 at Terrible's Lakeside Casino in Osceola. Tickets are $20-$40.

BeJae Fleming and Jackie Blount return to Iowa for shows on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Stomping Grounds in Ames with Andy Fleming and Lyle Kevin Hogue and on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Ritual Cafe in Des Moines with Thankful Dirt. Admission TBA.

This week at the House of Bricks: "The National Alliance on Mental Illness Benefit Concert" with The Knobs, Havick, Icon Status, Gimikk and Simple Sights ($10) on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. and the Nekromantix ($12) at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4:45 p.m.

Legendary local country music promoter Smokey Smith and author Terry Manley will participate in a "Historical Discovery Discussion" on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the State Historical Library and Archives Reading Room in the East Village. Manley will speak and sign copies of his new book, "Smokey: The Legendary Life of Iowa's Mr. Country Music." An exhibit of some of Smith's personal items will be displayed. The event is free.

North of Grand will host the "Grain Belt Get Down" on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9:30 p.m. at Carl's Place. Admission is free. Raffle ticket monies benefit the Miracle League of Iowa.

Blues-rock guitarist Jimmy Thackery performs Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9:30 p.m. at All Play. Tickets are $15 in advance. Visit http://www.bigreddogmusic.com.

The First Unitarian Church in Des Moines has announced the lineup for its 2011-2012 "Progressive Voices Concerts." It includes Ann Reed (Saturday, Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m.), Peter Mayer (Nov. 5), Emma's Revolution (Feb. 11, 2012) and Cosy Sheridan (June 15, 2012).
