Speezy's Lounge

New bar opens in familiar location

For years, Bogie's Pub provided patrons a place to kick back and relax while enjoying drink specials and nightly entertainment. When the doors closed, regulars wondered where they would get their nightlife fix. But wonder no more as a new owner has taken over the location and changed the name to Speezy's Lounge.

"I've promoted for bars all over the city, and I thought I would take a chance behind the bar and make a little money for myself," said owner Scott Motter. "I had worked with Bogie's in the past and knew there was a good crowd here. Plus, I got a lot of family in the neighborhood, so it was a prime location for me."

The bar opened a few weeks ago, but patrons are already packing it in.

"We've already had some real good crowds," Motter said. "We're getting a good mix of the Bogie's regulars and new customers stopping in."

Happy Hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Patrons can enjoy two-for-one domestic draws and wells. On Tuesdays, stop in and watch "Sons of Anarchy" while enjoying two-for-one specials and stop in Thursday for karaoke starting at 9 p.m., with two-for-one domestic draws and wells. Also, instead of Jello shots, the bar serves loaded gummy bears (5 for $3).

"The bears are something unique, and the customers love them. We have been selling out of them," Motter said. "We have 10 different flavors including tequila, Hennessey and vodka."

Speezy's has football fans covered this upcoming season with 15 TVs. The bar features the NFL Sunday Ticket and will show all the Iowa and Iowa State games. The bar will open an hour before Hawkeye games on Saturday, serving free domestic draws. Drink specials offered during football on Sunday and Monday include $2.50 Captain and Cokes and $4 Bombs with an additional special during Monday Night Football.

"During Monday Night Football, we'll be serving progressive pitchers," Motter said. "So during the first quarter, pitchers are $7, and each quarter they drop in price. So the second quarter is $6, the third quarter is $5, and during the fourth quarter they're only $4."

Along with the 15 TVs, the bar also has a 100-inch projection TV, which is hooked up to an Xbox 360.

"It'll always be hooked up with 'Madden,' 'Call of Duty' and 'NCAA Football,' so customers can stop down anytime and game," Motter said.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, from 9 to 10:30 p.m., stop in for the Bud Light NFL Fan Camp and show off your "Madden" skills for a chance to compete for a trip to the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii. Specials include $2.50 Bud/Bud Light bottles.

The bar will also hold a Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a "Bad Girl Back to School Bash."

"There will be plenty of drink specials, and we'll be giving away a trip to Vegas for the naughtiest school girl outfit," Motter said.

Although the name has changed, Motter says the vibe has stayed the same and welcomes everyone to visit Speezy's Lounge.

"We offer a relaxed lounge environment with a club vibe," Motter said. "We have a friendly staff and plenty of great drink specials, so stop in and check us out." CV
