Author returns

Author John Shors returns to Des Moines as the final speaker in the 2011 AViD Author Series on Monday, Sept. 12. He'll be speaking about his new book, "Cross Currents," which focuses on a trio of Americans and a local family on an island in Thailand whose personal dramas play out against the tsunami of 2004. Help fight heart disease

On Sept. 9, celebrate numerous ways women can take charge of their health and live longer lives free from heart disease and stroke at the Go For Red For Women luncheon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Sheraton West Des Moines, 1800 50th St. A number of seminars include the opportunity to learn CPR, hear from heart disease survivors and learn ways to improve your heart health in 10 weeks. A silent auction will be held featuring purses stuffed with goodies by local women, celebrities and leaders, with the money raised benefiting education and research in Iowa. Dog show

The Des Moines Kennel Club will host a Dog Show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Varied Industries Building, Sept. 9 – 11. Admission is free, and the show runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily. The specialty and all-breed dog show includes conformation, obedience, rally trials and junior showmanship. More than 150 breeds of dogs will be on hand, with dogs from across the country competing for Best in Show. Treasures from the past

Historic Valley Junction will hold its annual Antique Jamboree on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event features more than 100 antique dealers from across the Midwest displaying a wide array of antiques including furniture, primitives, architecture, vintage clothing, jewelry, linens/quilts, glassware, stoneware, textiles, toys and much more.
