Fire investigation at the 200 block of 15th
Street. The reporting party told police a man
intentionally started some leaves on fire next
to where he was camping, at the Central Iowa
Shelter grounds. He told cops he had left to
go get dinner, then walked back to camp. When
he arrived, the alleged suspect told him to
come look at the fire he'd built, so he did,
and then went back to his bed. He said the man
continued to play with the fire and then said,
"I gotta get outta here, or I'm going to
go to jail." Then he took off on foot.
Firefighters contained the fire, but the suspect
was not located.

Assault on a police officer at the 400 block
of East Payton Street. Police were dispatched
to assist staff at Orchard Place, 925 Porter
Street, who were chasing a runaway juvenile.
An officer followed until he caught up with
the kid and told him to stop, but the juvenile
continued on foot, so the officer sprayed pepper
spray in his face and tried to pull him to the
ground by his hood. That's when the suspect
started throwing violent punches at the cop,
hitting him in the arm, so he sprayed him again.
As he was being cuffed, the suspect kicked the
officer. He was arrested and charged. CV |
