Support rising stars


The up-and-comers of the Des Moines Metro Opera Apprentice Artists will perform at the annual Stars of Tomorrow concert on Thursday, July 14 at the Drake University Sheslow Auditorium, 2507 University Ave. The event, which starts at 7 p.m. will feature the Stars of Tomorrow concert featuring arias, duets and ensembles from many different operas. A dessert reception with the artists will follow the concert. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. For more information, visit http://www.dmmo.org.


Let moonlight guide you


Gray's Lake, 1631 Fleur Drive, will host its "Float by the Light of the Moon" on Friday, July 15 starting at 8:30 p.m. Take a relaxing float under the stars while enjoying the sights of the pedestrian bridge and sounds of the calm water. Gray's Lake offers rental boats for $5 (30 minutes) and all non-gas boats are also welcome to join in the fun (flashlights are required). Bring your own goodies or purchase snacks at the concession stand. "Float by the Light of the Moon" will also take place on Aug. 13 and Sept. 12. Clive Festival


The 36th Annual Clive Festival takes place at the Clive Aquatic Center, 1801 N.W. 114th St. on Friday, July 15 (5 p.m. to midnight) and Saturday, July 16 (noon to midnight). The two-day event is free and open to the public. Attendees can enjoy an array of entertainment including a tug-of-war contest, a bean bag tournament, the mayor's bike ride, a fishing clinic, a rock climbing wall, animal exhibits, a kids art contest, guided tours of Greenbelt Trail, inflatable rides, a kids corner with crafts and storytelling, food vendors, a beer and wine tent, live music and the grand finale "Thunder Over Clive" fireworks display (9:30 p.m. on Saturday). Celebrate the neighborhood, eat sweet corn


The Annual Highland Park Sweet Corn Day takes place on Saturday, July 16 from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m in the Highland Park neighborhood (Sixth and Euclid Avenue/Sixth and Douglas Avenue). Admission is $8 and $4 for kids ages 5 to 12 (kids 5 and under are free). Attendees receive a hot roast pork sandwich, a slice of watermelon, flavored ice tea and unlimited sweet corn.
