KC and the Sunshine Band plays Prairie Meadows Thursday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $24-$59 through Ticketmaster.

Hip-hop artists Gorilla Zoe and Nappy Roots play the Val Air Ballroom on Thursday, June 23. Tickets are $30 through Ticketmaster and the ballroom's box office... In other Val Air news, Snoop Dogg returns July 27 ($35) and Bassnectar ($27) performs Sept. 28.

The Des Moines chapter of "Metal Up Your Tap," a monthly, all-ages showcase of national and local metal bands to be held the last Friday of every month at the Vaudeville Mews, hosts its first show this week. On Friday, June 24, Chicago-based Deadnight performs at 6:30 p.m. with openers Black Market Fetus and Primal Breath. Admission is $5.

West Town Church in West Des Moines will host "Java Jazz" on Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at Stilwell Junior High School. Free music, food and coffee is included.

When The Douglas Acres Band hosts its CD release party on Saturday, June 25 at 9 p.m. at People's Court (see this week's "Sound Check" for a review) it will also unveil its new lineup. Original members Beau and Ben Nystrom of Des Moines are now joined by Shane Johnson (guitar), Travis Muzney (drums), Al Kabela (pedal steel) and Scott Boyles (bass). Admission to the show is $10 and includes of copy of the band's new, self-titled album.

Music Under the Stars, the free weekly concerts held every Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the State Capitol's West Terrace, is also a drop-off point for gently used instruments. Organizers of the event are collecting donated instruments for Des Moines area schools and students. This week's concert features a performance by The Rhythm Majors and 34th Army Band.

The Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble, an experimental avant-garde band that fancies "electro-acoustic" instrumental music as heard on its latest album, "III," performs Monday, June 27 at 10 p.m. at the Vaudeville Mews. Admission is $5.

Sean Chambers plays the Gas Lamp on Wednesday, June 29 at 8 p.m. Admission is $7.

Rebel Creek and The Chatty Cathys both won the play-in showcase last week at People's Court for the chance to play the main stage at the 80/35 Fest next week. Pink Mink, Infantree, The Macpodz, Jacob Tyler Wolfgang, The Junkyard Orchestra and Love Songs for Lonely Monsters have also been added to the lineup.

All-ages shows just announced at House of Bricks include Sparks the Rescue, Rookie of the Year and Select Start on July 12 and Breathe Electric on July 15. Both shows start at 5 p.m. and tickets are $10 through Midwestix.

Dave Moore will replace Max Jury on July 15 at The Lighthouse Concert Series at West Des Moines Christian Church. Showtime is 7 p.m. Admission is $10.

Veteran rapper Too Short performs July 30 at Club 504. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Grand Funk Railroad and Cowboy Mouth play July 27 at Haines Park in Altoona during RAGBRAI. Tickets are $15 and includes a T-shirt.

Yellowcard performs Oct. 17 at People's Court. Tickets are $20 through Ticketfly. CV
