Enjoy the Last Supper

Make your Lenten observance more meaningful this year by attending the Last Supper Drama, presented by the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, 720 Grand Ave., West Des Moines, on Thursday, April 21. This free show, based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s well-known painting, shows the disciples of Jesus Christ around the table after Jesus announces that one of them will betray him. Free thinkers unite

The Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers will host their national convention at the Embassy Suites on the River, 101 E. Locust St., during Easter weekend, April 21-24. Randy Henderson, President of Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, will deliver a welcome and discuss local issues in an address at the opening of the convention. Other events include appearances by Iowa State University’s Dr. Hector Avalos, famous author of “God is not Great,” Christopher Hitchens, biologist P.Z. Myers and many other notable presenters. A night of big hair

On Saturday, April 23, get ready for an unforgettable night of glamour and entertainment as The Des Moines Art Center Big Hair Ball takes over. This highly anticipated, bi-annual event will feature local boutiques offering hair, nail and make-up artistry, live music, appetizers and adult beverages. The evening will culminate in a spectacular runway show, featuring modeled hair and short programs designed by local salons, with special performances by Kees Camp and the Des Moines Metro Opera. Bike and car night

The Iowa State Fairgrounds will host “The Gathering on the Grounds” on Tuesday nights through September from 6 to 10 p.m. Along with the chance to see some pristine cars and bikes, the free event will feature live music and a beer garden. The family-friendly event will take place April 26; May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; June 14 and 21; July 5 and 12; Aug. 30, and September 6, 13, 20 and 27. This is a weather-permitting event.
