Sing with the big screen

Fans of the classic film “The Sound of Music” will have a chance to sing along with Maria and the Trapp Family Singers during two screenings at the State Historical Building Auditorium on March 18 (7 p.m.) and March 19 (1 p.m.). “Sing Along Sound of Music!” encourages audience members to sing along with classic songs including “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favorite Things” and “The Sound of Music.” There will also be a selection of Bil Baird’s marionettes on display, which were featured during the “The Lonely Goatherd” scene in the film. Toot your flute

The Des Moines Metro Opera performs “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the Upper Level (Younkers Wing) of Jordan Creek Mall on Saturday, March 19. The free event, which features Mozart’s delightful commentary on love, forgiveness, tolerance and the brotherhood of mankind, starts at 11 a.m. “The Magic Flute” returns to OPERA Iowa after an absence of 10 years and is the perfect opera to delight and dazzle audiences of all ages. Four weeks of zoo fun

The Blank Park Zoo presents a new drop-off program for children (ages 3 to 5) called “Zoodlers!” The program is a four-week series of classes for children every Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, March 22 to April 14 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Children will participate in games, songs, role plays and crafts as well as discovering nature as they spend time with animals and educators. The cost for all four weeks of classes (eight sessions) is $130 for members and $150 for non-members. Fix your house up

Renovation Boot Camp is an eight-class seminar series designed to give participants a basic understanding of the renovation process from purchase to project completion. Classes take place every Monday (starting March 21) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smokey Row Coffee Shop, 1910 Cottage Grove Ave. The cost is $8 per class or $45 for all six.
