Ordinance outlook
As of last week, approximately 70 fines had been issued for residents who failed to comply with Des Moines’ city ordinance that requires sidewalks to be shoveled within 48 hours of a snowstorm. The city issued 1,322 fines last winter, totaling $70,500 for improperly shoveled sidewalks. In 2009, there were 288 fines and 219 in 2008. Fines for noncompliance are $50 for the first offense, $75 for the second violation and $100 for the third.
