New artwork on display

Olson-Larsen Galleries, 203 Fifth St., will host an opening reception for a group show of artwork beginning Friday, Feb. 18. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include artwork by Michael Brangoccio, Timothy Frerichs, Bonney Goldstein, Gary Olsen and Jan Zelfer-Redmond. Poster show debuts

87central and Mars Café, 2318 West University Ave., will present the grand opening of the Pour-Over Poster Show on Friday, Feb. 18. The show runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and will feature 30 local artists’ hand-printed, coffee-themed posters. Admission is free. Visit www.marscafe.net.


Alice visits Des Moines

Ballet Des Moines will present “Alice in Wonderland” on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Des Moines Civic Center, 221 Walnut St. Performances will be held at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Children are invited to attend Alice’s Tea Party before the shows at 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The show is set to live music performed by 60 members of the Des Moines Community Orchestra and features 100 local and four professional dancers from the Colorado and Cincinnati ballet companies. Celebrate Black History

Black History Month Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center, 75 E. Army Post Road. The day begins at 1 p.m. and includes hands-on activities that allow visitors to explore the stories of Fort Des Moines African-American history. Admission is free. Visit www.fortdesmoines.org.


Everything deer

The Iowa Deer Classic will take place Feb. 25-27 at the Iowa Events Center, 730 Third St. The three-day event includes exhibits for hunting and the great outdoors, archery tournaments, Big Buck contests, seminars and a Hall of Fame whitetail display. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth age 7 to 12 and is free for kids age 6 and younger.
