Still hayseed enough

American rock singer John Mellencamp may have stated it best in his song “Small Town,” with “Got nothing against a big town; Still hayseed enough to say look who’s in the big town.”

We are proud of our small-town roots (and, for you natives, yes, Des Moines is a small town), so when a fellow Iowan takes a Midwestern work ethic and accomplishes great things, we take notice.

As another effort to celebrate the often-uncelebrated Iowans who make their way to the truly big towns, we share the story of Joe Slade White, a Carroll native who has worked with big names in the world of politics and has become known as an expert in the political advertising field, bringing much attention to his work and the people he has represented. With a growing number of presidential candidates swarming our state, we found it fitting to highlight one of our own who has helped put the sizzle on the political steak.
