The Iowa Home Show is scheduled from Jan. 14-16 at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, East 30th Street and East University Avenue. The three-day event will include seminars from decorating difficult areas to the latest in going and staying green. Hours are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6.95 for adults, $5.95 for seniors age 62 and older and is free for youth age 12 and younger. Hair for care
Wild Hairz, 2355 East University Ave., Suite 104, will have a cut-a-thon for charity on Saturday, Jan. 15. The charity event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and proceeds will benefit the Homeless Shelter of Iowa. Admission is $10. Call 262-1037.
Donate to the pantry
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Food Drive is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17 at several locations around the metro. The Des Moines Area Religious Council will be collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations for the Emergency Food Pantry. The Des Moines Downtown Chamber of Commerce has announced a new series for 2011 entitled “The Journey” hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael Gartner. “The Journey” will share the stories of some of Des Moines’ most fascinating professionals in a one-hour, one-on-one interview. “The Journey” includes profiles of Suku Radia, president and CEO of Bankers Trust (Jan. 27); Laura Hollingsworth, president and publisher of The Des Moines Register (April 12); David Maxwell, president of Drake University (Aug. 18); Mary O’Keefe, senior vice president and chief of marketing officer of The Principal Financial Group (Nov. 8). The series will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Principal Financial Group Auditorium, 711 High St. Admission is free for Downtown Chamber members and $20 for non-members.
