Four shows of note play the House of Bricks this week. On Thursday, Dec. 30, Duke Tomatoe and the Power Trio ($10) perform at 8 p.m. Dirty Grampa opens. Then on Saturday, Jan. 1, “Happy FU Year!” celebrates the birthday of Jon “FU” Fullerton of the Junk Poets with performances by the Junk Poets, World Under, Superchief and Cornfed Bruiser at 9 p.m. ($10). Finally, HOB hosts two all-ages concerts by I’m Prettier Than You, To Breathe Among Giants and The Party Foul ($5) on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. and Odd Never Even and The Estate ($5) play on Monday, Jan. 3 at 5 p.m.

Two soundmen from the former Blues on Grand, Scott Allen and Scott Long, have teamed up to form Big Red Dog Productions and are booking local, regional and national blues acts at All Play in downtown Des Moines. Each Friday, Sumpin’ Doo plays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $4 and food will be served. Allen confirmed that The Bel Airs (Jan. 7, $10), Devon Allman (Feb. 11) and Trampled Under Foot (April 1) will perform at All Play. He said that they are considering a number of other national acts, too. “We’re depending on sales at the door and hope that people will support it. If it goes well, we’ll expand,” said Allen.

In other blues news: The Botanical Center will again host performances by local blues artists on Sundays at 1 p.m. Admission is $5. The lineup includes Cindy Grill and Alan Smith (Jan. 2), Bob Pace (Jan. 9), Brad “Bebad” McCloud and “The Bear” (Jan. 16), Pat Hemann and J.D. Flanagan (Jan. 23), “Mojo” Jono (Jan. 30), Tina Haase Findlay and Brandon Findlay (Feb. 6), Dewey Cantrell and Jodi Botley (Feb. 13), Homegrown Tomatoes (Feb. 20) and Matt Woods (Feb. 27).

Local jazz artists have until Jan. 24, 2011 to complete their application to participate in the Metro Arts Alliance’s 29th annual Jazz in July concert series. Selected bands will be notified by Feb. 28, 2011. Visit www.metroarts.org.

Two all-ages shows coming to the Vaudeville Mews: Haste The Day, My Children My Bride and A Plea For Purging on Jan. 29, 2011 ($13) and Emilie Autumn on March 12, 2011 ($15). Tickets are available through Midwestix.

Rev Theory, Pop Evil, Hail the Villain and Black Cloud Collective play an all-ages show at People’s Court on Feb. 22, 2011. Tickets are $10 through Midwestix.

Another Christmas has passed, as perhaps has your chance to buy something authentic for the Maggot in your life. Last week, David Wilkins of Des Moines, a.k.a. DaVo, tried selling on eBay a folding card table with an opening bid of $400 that Slipknot used when it signed a contract with Roadrunner Records in 1998. Wilkins was friends with the band from its start and used the table for the band’s marathon games of Risk it played in the recording studio. A photo of the band singing the contract at Wilkins’ former Axiom studio was posted with the online auction, which expired without a buyer. CV
