Hoop it up
The Polk County Convention Complex, 501 Grand Ave., will host the Skywalk Madness – AAU Basketball Tournament from Monday, Dec. 27 to Wednesday, Dec. 29. Each team will play a minimum of three games and have the chance to play in Wells Fargo Arena. Entry to the tournament is $225 per team. All participants must be registered with the AAU. See Duane and Floppy
The State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust St., will host the second annual Duane & Floppy Film Festival from Tuesday, Dec. 28 to Thursday, Dec. 30. The three-day event will give visitors the opportunity to watch the “Floppy Show.” Showtimes are 1 and 7 p.m. each day and will feature one-hour episodes compiled by the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting. Tickets are only available one hour prior to showtime, at the door. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 12 and younger and individuals over age 65. Visit www.iowahistory.org.
Take a hike
Jester Park, 11407 N.W. Jester Park Drive, will host a Night Hike on Tuesday, Dec. 28. The hike takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. as Polk County Conservation naturalists will speak and lead activities. Learn sign language
The Deaf Action Center of Iowa, 2525 E. Euclid Ave., Suite 100, will begin a new series of American Sign Language classes for six weeks starting Jan. 25, 2011. Celebrate the New Year
Des Moines’ premier non-alcoholic family New Year’s Eve Celebration, GuideOne ImaginEve, will be held Dec. 31.
