Help prevent violence

The Different Colors of Violence XI Youth Conference will be held Thursday, Dec. 16 and Friday, Dec. 17 at Grand View University’s Johnson Wellness Center in Des Moines, 1500 Morton Ave. The two-day event will discuss violence preventions, strategies and interventions. The conference is intended for high school students on Thursday and middle school students on Friday. Registration is required with signed adult permission for youth. Admission is free. Visit the farmers’ market

The Winter Farmers’ Market is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 17 and Saturday, Dec. 18 at Nollen Plaza, 300 Locust St. The event will include more than 120 vendors selling locally raised products including eggs, beef, pork duck, turkey, holiday hams and more. There will also be homemade products including honey, jams, salsa, wine, cheese, pies and more. The event will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free.


Save the rare animals

The Blank Park Zoo, 7401 Southwest 9th St., will host “An Evening with Art of Conservation” on Friday, Dec. 17. The event begins at 6 p.m. and the presentation will start at 7 p.m. Julie Ghrist, a Des Moines native, will speak about her Rwanda-based organization working to save rare animals. Appetizers and drinks will be available. Admission is $30 per person or $20 per student with a valid student ID. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Count the birdies

The 2010 Dallas County Christmas Bird Count will be held Saturday, Dec. 18. The event is hosted by the Dallas County Conservation Board and is a one-day event (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in which observers count, census style, all the birds they encounter that day. Materials are furnished, and people of all skill levels are welcome to participate. Admission is free, and pre-registration is required.
