The Freedom for Youth Ministries: Voices of Freedom Event is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Friday, Oct. 29 at the Freedom Center, 2301 Hickman Road in Des Moines. The three-day event is an interactive experience where participants can walk through an African hut, a jail cell, see the sights and sounds of a natural disaster area and hear stories from youth from the inner city and rural Iowa. The event is focused on creating awareness about the youth served at Freedom. Admission is $5 and five donated items. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening. Family Halloween at LHF
Living History Farms’ Family Halloween Nights will take place from Thursday, Oct. 28 to Sunday, Oct. 31. The non-scary family event features horse-drawn wagon rides, marshmallow roasts, jack-o-lantern displays and more. Admission is $5 per person or $4.50 for Living History Farm members. The 11th annual Taste of Altoona will take place on Thursday, Oct. 28 at the Meadows Events and Conference Center, 1 Prairie Meadows Drive. Sock hop at the GDT
The Gateway Dance Theatre will kick off its new community dance project, “The 1960s Halloween Sock Hop,” on Saturday, Oct. 30. The dance takes place at the East Village Studio, 315 East 5th St., and runs from 7 to midnight. Admission is $2 per person or $5 for a family/household of four.
