Slipknot’s “(sic)nesses” concert DVD, filmed in June 2009 at the United Kingdom’s Download Festival, debuted last week at No. 1 on Billboard’s DVD Chart, ahead of “The 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concerts.”

Powerhouse blues singer-guitarist Michael Burks, who is known for playing an entire night without taking a break, performs Friday, Oct. 22 at 9:30 p.m. at Blues on Grand. Admission is $10.

Folk-Americana singer-songwriter Sarah Sample performs Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at Ritual Cafe. Cover TBA. Sample’s new album, “Someday, Someday,” was released Oct. 12.

Des Moines “rural sophisticates” Big Joe Kinser and Jen Hughes perform Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Westminster Church’s Anchor Coffee House. Tickets are $10 in advance (274-1534). Free childcare is provided.

Two all-ages shows play at 5 p.m. this weekend at the House of Bricks. On Saturday, Oct. 23, Evoked, Thru It All and The Maw perform ($10); and on Sunday, Oct. 24, The Knobs, Shatter, Section Hate and Off the Rocker perform ($7).

The Des Moines Symphony will perform its “Youth & Nostalgia” concerts on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines. Sixteen-year-old guest artist and violin prodigy Chad Hoopes will perform and Mischa Santora will serve as guest conductor. Tickets are $10-$55 through Ticketmaster. ... In related news, the symphony received a $25,000 grant from (Des Moines grocer) W.T. and Edna M. Dahl Trust to support the “Symphony’s Beyond the Score: New World Symphony” concerts Nov. 13-14.

On tour to promote their eighth studio album, “How Big Cab You Get? A Tribute to Cab Calloway,” Big Bad Voodoo Daddy performs “A Tribute to Cab Calloway” on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Stephen’s Auditorium in Ames. Tickets are $20 - $37 through Ticketmaster.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie has proclaimed Sunday, Oct. 24 as “Jazz History Day in Des Moines” in honor of the Greater Des Moines Community Jazz Center’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony that will be held that day at Adventureland Inn in Altoona.

Bob Dylan performs Sunday, Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. Tickets are $48 through Ticketmaster.

Two shows playing this week at People’s Court: Hank Williams III performs on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. (Read the review of his new album, “Rebel Within” in this week’s “Sound Check”); and Chicago-based, prog-rockers Umphrey’s McGee play on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for each show through Midwestix.

Two shows coming to People’s Court: Relient K (acoustic) with Deas Vail on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m., $15; and Less Than Jake, The Supervillains and Off With Their Heads on Feb. 4, 2011 at 6 p.m., $16.50. Tickets are available through Midwestix.

LeAnn Rimes plays Nov. 13 at the Val Air Ballroom. Tickets are $35 through Ticketmaster.
