Night Eyes visits zoo
Blank Park Zoo’s 20th annual “Night Eyes” is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 21 to Sunday, Oct. 24 and Oct. 28 to 31. The merry, not scary, Halloween fund-raising festival is intended for children and adults to trick or treat throughout the zoo. Guests are encouraged to dress in costume. Hours are Thursday and Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 and $4 for zoo members. Children under age 1 are free. Visit www.blankparkzoo.com.
Enjoy locally-produced musical
The musical “Thursday’s Children” will begin an eight-performance run from Saturday, Oct. 23 to Nov. 7 at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust St. The locally-produced musical is inspired by the events of the 1965 black ramband protest that lead to the landmark civil rights case of “Tinker v. the Des Moines Independent Community School District.” The show on Saturday, Oct. 23 is at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. For a complete list of performance times, visit www.thursdays-children.com. Pit Bulls aren’t all mean
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL), 5452 N.E. 22nd St., will participate in National Pit Bull Awareness Day on Saturday, Oct. 23. The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., and people are encouraged to come support the misunderstood breed while enjoying food, a cash bar and door prizes. Shred the skate park
The fifth annual Night of the Living Shred will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 at Saylorville Skate Park, 6359 N.E. 14th St. The event, which runs from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., will include skate contests, pumpkin carving, raffles, dodgeball and more.
