Rock your ribbon
The AIDS Project of Central Iowa will have its Red Carpet Benefit event entitled “Rock Your Ribbon” on Thursday, Oct. 14 at Liars Club, 216 Court Ave. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. with a red carpet entrance and photo shoot followed by a show from the best drag queens in the Midwest. Admission is $5, and proceeds from the event will benefit the AIDS Project of Central Iowa, the state’s largest HIV/AIDS service and prevention agency. Visit www.aidsprojectci.org.
Sleep under the stars
The fifth-annual Reggie’s Sleepout will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Drake Stadium, 2719 Forest Ave. The annual event begins at 3 p.m., as participants will sleep under the stars to raise awareness and education on youth homelessness. All things pet
The Great Iowa Pet Expo is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 17 at the 4-H Exhibits Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, East 30th Street and East University Avenue. The event is a celebration of pets, pet owners, pet products and services. There will also be pet related entertainment, contests and pet expert advice. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for youth ages 6 to 12 and is free for children ages 5 and younger. Bring in the food
Volunteers will accept food and cash contributions for the Des Moines Area Religious Council’s Emergency Food Pantry on Saturday, Oct. 16. Participating grocery stores are Dahl’s, Hy-Vee and Fareway in Des Moines, West Des Moines and Ankeny. Shoppers are encouraged to purchase $5 Hunger Sacks or make a donation. Fight breast cancer
The 19th annual Komen Race for the Cure will take place Oct. 23, celebrating survivorship or honoring those who have lost their breast cancer battle.
