A harvest of cash
Most of us as Iowans maintain some connection to farming, even here in the metro. Those who were raised in the city seem to have a cousin, friend or college roommate who spent days on the farm. It is part of who we are as Iowans.
The national media likes to portray us all donning seed corn hats and bib overalls, but that’s OK. We know that farming, like most other industries, is a now a sophisticated mix of chemistry, electronics, machinery and hard work. It is now big business, and as a result, has also become quite political.
Mention the words farming subsidies in this state, and you will get some strong reactions. Iowans have more opinions on this subject than the state has hogs — and that’s a lot.
