Opera celebration

The Des Moines Metro Opera will kick off its 39th season on Thursday, Sept. 16 with an evening of food, drinks and live entertainment including excerpts from this season’s upcoming shows. Charity Bags Tournament

Boston’s Restaurant and Sports Bar and the YMCA have partnered to host their second Charity Bags Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18. Running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will raise funds for central Iowa’s first rehabilitation bike, which will benefit local residents living with paralyzing spinal cord injuries and other neuromuscular deficiencies. Teams of two are welcome, and all singles will be paired into teams. Registration is $10, and participants are encouraged to register early at Boston’s, 12401 University Ave., but same-day registration is available until 10:45 a.m. Live entertainment, drink specials and the chance to win prizes is included. In case of rain, meet at the YMCA Healthy Living Center, 12493 University Ave.


Cars, chicks and calendars

Cornfed Customs will hold a 2011 Calendar Release party on Sunday, Sept. 19 in front of The Underground, 500 E. Locust St. The event, which also celebrates The Underground’s 2-year anniversary, begins at 1 p.m. and will include a hot rod show (featuring a number of cars in the calendar), beer, food vendors and seven bands, including The Jitz and Rumble Seat Riot, performing throughout the day. This will also be the first and possibly the only chance to buy Cornfed Customs 2011 Calendar ($15) featuring local pin-up models and hot rods.


Reach out to those in need

Registration is open for the annual Out of Darkness Walk, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 19 at DMACC Lake, Building No. 7 in Ankeny. The walk, one of five is scheduled from 1:30 to 4 p.m., will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to fund research, education and advocacy programs.
