The Des Moines City Council recently approved $2,001 for Mayor Frank Cownie to attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors Fall Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., from Sept. 22 to 26. The conference will focus on topics of national deficit reduction commission, CDBG and other Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs, and fund-raising priorities like the Energy Block Grant. Additionally, Cownie will attend the ICLEI Local Action Summit 2010 and will meet with elected officials from local governments on the forefront of sustainability. The council also approved $1,374 for Carol Gathright, EC/W & S Coordinator, to attend a HUD sponsored conference in Atlanta, Ga., from Sept. 26 to 30. The conference provides attendees with the tools necessary to plan for the implementation of the HEARTH legislation in terms of program operation and data collection impacting grantees homeless funding sources.
