Local author stops by bookstores
Des Moines author John Shors will stop by Barnes and Noble, 4550 University Ave., on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. to promote his new book “The Wishing Trees.” There will be a discussion and a book signing. 9/11 tribute scheduled
The Des Moines Association of Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 4, will host Firefest 2010 on Saturday, Sept. 11 on the Court Avenue Bridge. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the tribute will include speakers Rep. Leonard Boswell, Mayor Frank Cownie and Des Moines Fire Chief John TeKippe. At 9:30 a.m. there will be extrication demos, along with a U.S. Army Blackhawk Helicopter on display. After a break for the Iowa-Iowa State football game, gates will open at 5 p.m. for Firefest 2010. Live entertainment starts at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 with proceeds benefiting the Des Moines Firefighters Welfare Fund.
Celebrate classic autos
The Salisbury Concours d’Elegance, a celebration of the fine art and designs of the automobile, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Salisbury House, 4025 Tonawanda Drive. The second annual event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature classic era automobiles. Various Frank Lloyd Wright cars will be on display coinciding with the 2010 theme “Art and Design.” The museum will be open for tours throughout the day. Buffett to visit Drake University
Planned Parenthood of the Heartland will host “Life is What you Make It: A Concert and Conversation” with Peter Buffett on Wednesday, Sept. 15 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Planned Parenthood Book Sale. The event, which takes place at 6 p.m., will be held at the Sheslow Auditorium on the campus of Drake University, 2507 University Ave. Buffett, the son of Warren Buffett, is an Emmy Award-winning composer, musician and philanthropist.
