I’ve enjoyed your exchange with the Superintendent (“Superintendent fires back,” Sept. 2), but perhaps you could address one more thing and ask for some clarification regarding the downtown school. The local rag had an article a month or so ago about how the school district was going to spend $9 million dollars remodeling Central Campus so that they could move the downtown school there, in order to save $300,000 a year. According to my calculations it will take them 30 years to pay off the $9 million before they start saving anything. I know I’m probably not seeing the big picture, but I would appreciate knowing more.

It’s time we realize this country is being run into the ground
We Americans are quite possibly the most stupid and ignorant people on the face of the earth. Here’s my proof — more than 50 million citizens voted George W. Bush in for a second term. Further, on every Election Day the working people — unable to read or understand the Republican platform — vote to put the party of no bigots into Congress. It is a well-established fact that no Republican ever has (and probably never will) voted in favor of any legislation that would improve working conditions or the unfair wages paid to workers. And if the current polls are correct, we Iowans will probably return Charles Grassley and Terry Branstad to office. It’s no wonder the rest of the country thinks we are a bunch of hicks.
