More than a ‘ham sandwich’
A few years back I worked with a local guy on a business deal that he referred to as a “ham sandwich.” That was his arrogant way of telling me that this small deal wasn’t all that important to him. If it wasn’t going to be important to him, then it wasn’t going to be important to me either. We parted ways, but I have never forgotten the “sandwich” comment.
His analogy was horrible, as you don’t even hint to central Iowans that sandwiches aren’t important. That became crystal clear to me after implementing a sandwich survey and working on our cover story for this week.
When our “Food Dude,” Jim Duncan, first suggested creating an Ultimate Sandwich Tournament, I thought he might be on to something. What I didn’t know was how passionate our readers would be about what they put between two slices of bread.
Our Des Moines’ Ultimate Sandwich Tournament has turned out to be a big deal for the restaurants, our readers and the sandwiches. The results say something about who we are both individually and as central Iowans. And it’s much more than a ham sandwich.
Thanks for reading. CV
