The sound stage

Doubting Daniel & The Deliverance, Sad Fucks, Boom Chick and Daikaiju

Vaudeville Mews, Aug. 23.

A weird mixture of musical genres came together on a Monday night, but that didn’t stop fans from enjoying. Two locals and a couple of touring acts took the stage offering heavy tunes, toe tapping blues/rock and instrumental music. The Sad Fucks served a loud, brash set filled with screaming guitars, thudding bass and banging drums — completely polar opposites of their name. Their sound reminded me of the grunge era (not a bad thing), and some of their tunes were reminiscent to early Nirvana, Mudhoney and Soundgarden. Brooklyn, NY, duo Boom Chick followed. Made up of Frank Hoier (guitar/vocals) and Moselle Spiller (drums), the twosome tore through a foot-stomping set of originals (“Sharkbite” and “The Ghost of Bo Diddley”) and covers (Bo Diddley’s “She’s Alright,” John Lennon’s “Well Well Well” and Robert Johnson’s “Preachin’ Blues”). Boom Chick provided the best set of the night, and more people will hopefully attend next time they stop through town. Closing the show was Daikaiju, a spectacle like no other. The trio, whose faces were covered with kabuki masks, unleashed a tidal wave of instrumental, surf/punk based rock that kept the small crowd in awe. Sure the instrumental music grew tiresome, but the elegant kabuki stage antics and quickness of Secret-Man’s guitar impressed. Their set created an entertaining Japanese monster movie vibe, and they would be the first people to call when Godzilla invades the coast. CV— Jared Curtis
