Travel

The Des Moines City Council recently approved $1,432 for Mayor Frank Cownie to attend a meeting of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a member of the Task Force of Local, State, Tribal and Federal Preparedness. The meeting will take place Sept. 13 to 16 in Washington, D.C. The council also approved $1,371 for Jeremy Sprague, senior police officer, to attend a conference sponsored by the California Peer Support Association. The conference will take place in Ventura, Calif., from Sept. 14 to 18. Training will be used to assist in the implementation of the newly formed Des Moines Public Safety Peer Support Team. The budget for travel and training for the 2011 fiscal year is $621,718. The amount expended for travel and training as of Aug. 16 is $22,636. CV
