Aug. 8-10

Unknown date and time

Burglary in the 2500 block of Carpenter Avenue. On Aug. 10, a Drake University professor discovered that 11 Apple computers with keyboards and one printer, valued at approximately $3,000, were missing from the computer lab. He stated the lab has very few people, only staff that have access. He stated a cleaning staff does have access to the room each day. He also said the room has only three access points — the main door from the hallway, an emergency door, and a freight elevator which requires key access. The professor said students could only enter the room by checking out a key. There are no known suspects.

Aug. 8, 4:30 a.m.

Assault in the 600 block of Southwest Thornton Avenue. The victim told officers that after his friends left for the night, he and his roommate had an argument. The suspect punched the victim in the face. The victim fell, and the suspect continued to strike him. The victim escaped and a friend drove him to the hospital. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.

Aug. 9, 3:37 a.m.

First-degree burglary in the 330 block of East Hart Avenue. The victim stated someone walking toward the door awakened him. The victim yelled, “I see you,” at which point the suspect ran toward him. The victim locked the door, but the suspect kicked it in and chased him through the living room. The victim ran to another room, and second suspect entered the house. One suspect grabbed the victim, while the other suspect hit him in the head with a hammer. The victim was able to break free and run to the neighbor’s house. Officers were unable to locate the suspects. CV

Busted

Name: Daniel Martin Hilst

The story: Officers were tipped to apprehend the victim’s ex-boyfriend. Upon arrival, they saw the suspect, later identified as Hilst, running into a building. Officers pursued on foot and split up in case Hilst doubled back. Shortly after exiting the building, Hilst was found lying under a deck. Officers ordered Hilst to show his hands, but he failed to comply. Hilst then crawled out from under the deck on his belly. Not knowing if Hilst would fight or run, officers shoved him backward and placed him under arrest. The victim’s ex-boyfriend told officers that the two were yelling at each other when Hilst punched her in the face and pushed her against the wall. The victim escaped and tried to call 911, but Hilst jumped on her, knocking her to the ground in an attempt to grab the phone. Hilst was transported to the Polk County Jail and charged with simple assault, domestic assault (second offense), interference with official acts and obstruction of emergency communications.
