The Fear Campaign 2010 featuring After the Burial, Baptized in Blood, Divine Heresy, 36 Crazyfists and Fear Factory
People’s Court, July 19

Dedicated metal fans showed up in droves for a night full of blasting guitars, rumbling double bass drums and growling vocals as The Fear Campaign Tour 2010, led by Fear Factory, tore through Des Moines. After the Burial was the first band to impress thanks to their twin lead guitar attack. Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares took the stage with his other band, Divine Heresy, and shredded through great solos. Overall, they were the most talented musicians of the night. Fear Factory, closed the show with a whirlwind of ruckus and chaos. Gene Hoglan (Testament, Dethklok) joined the group on drums and showed why he is a drumming icon. The band sounded good, but after five metal acts (all sounding oddly similar) I was ready to go. I have to give it to the local metal fans though; I never once saw them tire from exhaustion, even after hours of head banging. — Jared Curtis

Old 97’s
Simon Estes Amphitheater, July 22

Although their show moved from Simon Estes Amphitheater to the Walnut Street Bridge, the Old 97s still provided a toe-tapping, rocking good time on a sultry July night. A decent crowd braved the humidity as the Old 97s rolled through an entertaining set of new tunes and classics like “Question” and “Timebomb.” The highlight was a cover of Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried.” Any band that isn’t afraid to cover one of country music’s best outlaw songs is OK in my book.
