The Melvins
“The Bride Screamed Murder”
Ipecac Records

After more than 25 years of playing some of the most influential (Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc.), experimental (Captain Beefhart playing heavy metal) punk-metal this side of Black Flag, The Melvins remain as indifferent to the trappings of popular music as the brainwashed masses are likely to be toward their new, dramatic record, “The Bride Screamed Murder.” (Amen to that.) Released on June 1, “The Bride Screamed Murder” further punctuates The Melvins’ idiosyncratic approach and bizarre sense of humor (“Hospital Up” merges grunge, metal and jazz) as they slash their way through eight originals and an almost unrecognizable cover of The Who’s “My Generation” thanks to the ageless vocals and guitars of founding member Buzz Osbourne, aka King Buzzo, and longtime drummer Dale Crover. Punk-metal tunes “Electric Flower” and “Inhumanity and Death” flat out rock. CV
(The Melvins perform Sunday, June 27 at 9 p.m. at the House of Bricks. $15.)

Sevendust
“Cold Day Memory”
7Bros Records

Sevendust’s chemistry is what made the Atlanta-based hard-rock band a success from 1997 to 2003 and it is what fuels their latest album, “Cold Day Memory,” their best effort to date thanks to the return of founding guitarist Clint Lowery. The album’s first single, “Unraveling,” in the Top 20 on the BDS Active Rock chart, is Sevendust’s first crossover hit. But the strength of the album’s 12 songs is the band’s musicianship, led by Lowery, who left Sevendust in 2003 to form Dark New Day. Lowery plays like he has something to prove on the galactic “Splinter,” the experimental, tribal “Karma” and the apocalyptic “The End is Coming.” In addition to the new music, this CD includes a bonus DVD, featuring an hour’s worth of backstage footage and band interviews that are sure to please longtime fans who should welcome Lowery back with open arms. (Sevendust plays Saturday, June 26 at 8 p.m. at 7 Flags Event Center. $18.)
