Summertime means warm weather, and warm weather means sitting on a patio enjoying a cool drink. So what better way to kick off the start of summer than with our annual Summer Bar Guide? The following is a comprehensive list of taverns, nightclubs and favorite watering holes in central Iowa. While there are many great patios throughout the metro, our staff highlights five in the area where patrons can sit back, relax and take in the view all at once. By no means is this a list of the best, but rather five places that are unique in style and location. They are the perfect outdoor destinations where you can kiss your worries goodbye and say hello to summer. Cheers to seeing you there.

A patio with a neighborhood vibe
Since opening in October 2008, GoodSons has become a patio destination for patrons of the Beaverdale neighborhood and beyond. Nestled in the community, GoodSons provides a relaxing atmosphere along Beaver Avenue.
“Many of the area’s patios are in the back where people can’t really see much, but that’s not the case with this one,” said co-owner Aaron Milik. “The patio is laid back, but at the same time you’re right off Beaver Avenue.”
The patio seats approximately 45 patrons, who can also listen to the bar’s music while sipping a cold one. GoodSons finds its patio busy throughout the summer, but it’s the annual Beaverdale Fall Festival (Sept. 17-18, 2010) that packs the place.
“We’re constantly busy over the Beaverdale Fall Festival weekend,” Milik said. “We’ve even started getting reservations from our patio regulars.”
While there are no immediate plans for the patio, Milik says the future is still bright. He hopes to add an awning and to bring in live entertainment, beer events, and even open the patio up for grilling by next summer.
“The patio is one of the biggest on the streets,” Milik said. “If you’re looking for a good time without many of the distractions, stop in.”

The people-watching patio
When people seek a night out on the town, the downtown Court Avenue Bar District is a fairly common destination. And what better place to take in the view than Dos Rios’ patio with some of the best Mexican food and drinks the area has to offer?
“Most people who visit the Court Avenue area pass by our patio starting or ending the night,” said Nate Novotny, restaurant/bar manager. “It’s a great place to people watch.”
Dos Rios’ patio is split between the bar side, which can hold 45, and the restaurant side, which can hold up to 75, respectively. Both are heated and on many nights are relaxing spots to a wide age range.
The patio also reaps the benefits from many of the parties that are held on Court Avenue throughout the year.
“We’re in a great location, and when people see our patio they’re attracted to it,” Novotny said.
While a handful of smaller events are held along Court Avenue, the restaurant and bar’s most popular event is Cinco de Mayo. Novotny says the establishment had nearly 1,000 attendees this past May, and the patio was packed to capacity.
“Our patio is one of a kind,” Novotny said. “It has everything you need for a fun night.”

The hidden escape patio
Have you ever felt the need to get away from it all? Well look no further than the Roof Garden, Coffee & Wine Bar at The Lagniappe in historic Valley Junction. Opening in summer 2007, the roof garden was the idea of owner Caren Sturm. Sturm passed away last summer, but her legacy lives on through her hidden escape.
“Caren wanted a garden atmosphere that was hidden away. Something that was both relaxing and inviting where people could enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee or tea,” said Janice Holmes, manager. “Before the garden was created, we used to sit out on the roof and talk about how we could make it more welcoming. She was very pleased with the way it turned out.”
The roof garden, which seats up to 50, features speakers for music, plenty of tables and chairs and a fire pit. Plans of expanding are in the works.
“People love sitting around the fire pit,” Holmes said. “We are hoping to expand the bottom into a courtyard, which will expand the capacity greatly.”
The Lagniappe holds numerous events on the roof garden including wine tastings, private parties (call for details) and live music, but during the Farmers’ Market, the roof garden becomes very popular.
“They have live music in the park, but you can hear it loud and clear from our patio,” Holmes said. “It’s a great piece to the Valley Junction experience.”
The roof garden is unlike any other patio in town, and people are surprised to discover such a gem.
“Customers tell me they don’t feel like they are in Des Moines when they are on the roof garden, but in New York or Paris. It’s a great escape without leaving town,” Holmes said. “Plus it’s the best place in Des Moines to watch the sunset.”

The patio with a lakefront view
The view of Copper Creek Lake, seen from the patio at Legends American Grill, is easily summed up in one word — breathtaking. The calmness of the water, the fresh breeze wafting through the air and hustle and bustle around the lake are all attributing factors in calling the patio at Legends one of the best. The establishment opened in 2000, but it wasn’t until 2004 when the patio took shape.
“The owner had a great idea for how the patio should look,” said bar manager Anthony Crum. “So they dug it all out, and in my opinion, created one of the best patios in town.”
The patio is huge, changing levels throughout giving it the feel of more space. Capacity is more than 130, and on a nice sunny day, a seat is tough to come by.
“The patio has a lot of space and packs in a ton of people,” Crum said. “Especially on nice days, it’ll be busy from open to close.”
There are speakers outside offering patio patrons music, and Crum says they are looking to add a few TVs on the patio.
Along with the great view, people can also enjoy the weekly Chill on the Hill concert series that takes place every Friday through July.
“They have a live band playing on the other side of the lake, and it is packed,” Crum said. “Afterwards, we have lots of customers who want to continue their night. Plus, sometimes the band that just played Chill On The Hill will set up on our patio and play another set.”
When asked about other patios in town, Crum ranks Legends with one of the best around.
“Rooftop bars are cool, but they don’t have a beautiful lakefront view. Our patio offers patrons a unique setting to an enjoy drinks or some food,” he said. “I haven’t been to all the patios around town, but this is the best I’ve seen.”

The patio with it all
When “patio” is in your establishment’s title, it had better live up to its name. For Saints Pub and Patio, the title does it justice and much more.
“If you’re not here by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, it’s going to be hard finding a seat because the patio fills up quickly,” said James Lewis, bartender. “Since the patio opened, it’s been busy nonstop.”
Saints Pub and Patio opened Jan. 7, but the patio didn’t open until May 2. Located just off the multipurpose trail in West Des Moines, patrons will find seating for 150 and a capacity size of more than 200. The patio has an outside kitchen that serves a partial menu, and also features three, 47-inch high definition televisions complete with sports entertainment packages.
“We have the MLB package, NFL Ticket and College GameDay,” Lewis said. “If you’re looking for a game, you’ll find it here.”
One of the largest draws to the patio is its Corona stage that features live music every Thursday and Sunday.
“There’s been a great response to the Corona stage,” Lewis said. “The live entertainment really adds to the experience.”
Although Saints Pub and Patio has been open less than one year, Lewis says it’s making a name for itself.
“We’ve had everything — birthday and bus parties, to bachelor and bachelorette parties,” he said. “But at the same time, we’re a regular neighborhood bar.”
