Big Head Todd and the Monsters with Head For The Hills
People’s Court — June 3
When the Goo Goo Dolls, Tonic and Marcy’s Playground play concerts around the metro, fans get a feeling of being back in the ’90s. But before you could recall your best “Beavis and Butthead” imitations, another band from the era hit the metro as Big Head Todd and the Monsters strolled into People’s Court last week.
Fellow Colorado act, Head For The Hills, opened the show with technical yet entertaining jamgrass tunes. The five-piece — guitar, keys, mandolin, fiddle, upright bass — weaved together like a fine rug, soloing and showcasing skills throughout. The band’s set came together during its cover of “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel. Midway through the set, they unleashed a psychedelic roar that could rival any jamband with mandolin player, Matt Chappell, plugging in with the use of pedals and shredding jamristic riffs. The show peaked toward the end and the left the crowd high off the energy.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters then unleashed a guitar-driven, high-energy, 20-plus song set that ran the gauntlet of their albums, highlighting their biggest “Sister Sweetly.” Songs like “Bittersweet,” Broken Hearted Savior” and “Circles” brought great applause from the audience as they sang along. Other memorables included “Dirty Juice,” “Please Don’t Tell Her” and a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom.” The set closed with a rocking cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chiles.”
Overall it was a great night for ’90s memories, without the “Macarena,” thank God. CV — Jared Curtis
