Sending troops to the border is not the answer
So, President Obama is going to send troops to “secure the border.” This reminds me of when President Nixon was going to end illegal drugs consumption by sending the federal police after the drug traffickers. And look what happened.
They all are talking about immigration reform, but I think that first we all should agree on what kind of reform this is going to be. And I hope everybody understands that whatever its shape, immigration reform is not going to end the tragedy along the U.S./Mexico border. Not at all. They are two different kinds of problems that require different solutions.
If you think there is a problem at the border right now, just wait. Mexico is a very stable country and for the last 70 years the presidential succession has never failed. But if the economic situation does not improve and there is a revolution and the federal government loses control of things, there will be millions of families just walking across the border from south to north. Then what do we do?
We need to recognize that whether we like it or not, the problems of our neighbors to the south will also be our problems. Now is the time we need to work together and find a solution.
