Deas Vail, Lights and Owl City
Val Air Ballroom, May 4
Bubblegum was in plain sight as the Val Air Ballroom drew a young crowd to a pop-melody-filled show. The median age of the crowd had to be 16, as numerous parents accompanied kids, and teenage girls roamed the floor in packs. Deas Vail took the stage first and tried its hardest to get the docile crowd warmed up. But when the biggest cheers of your set come when you ask if the crowd is ready for Owl City, you know you’ve been defeated. Taking the stage next was fiesty Canadian Valerie Poxleitner, also known as Lights. Her electropop sound flirted with Pat Benatar style beats and synth. Out of the three bands, Lights was my favorite. And even though all of her songs weren’t keepers, her set kept me entertained. Besides, anyone who can look sexy while rocking a keytar deserves some props. Closing the show was Owl City. As soon as the lights went down, the screams became reminiscent of a boy band concert. Adam Young, the mastermind behind Owl City, kicked out the jams starting the show with some kit work. As the rest of his band moved in, including two very sexy string players, Young took center stage switching from keyboards to acoustic and electric guitar. Young is very charismatic, building the young crowd into a sing-a-long army, especially when he played his biggest hit, “Fireflies.” For fans of the bands, the show was a success. For me, the music was too sweet to swallow. CV — Jared Curtis
