It’s five o’clock somewhere
The annual Clive After Five will begin Friday, May 21 at Linnan Park, east of 86th Street and Alice Avenue in Clive. The event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and is the Jaycee’s main fund-raiser of the year. Proceeds from the weekly events benefit local community organizations. Walk to fight arthritis
The 2010 Arthritis Walk will take place Saturday, May 22 at the Blank Park Zoo, 7401 S.W. 9th St. Participants are encouraged to form a team or join as an individual and walk the one-mile or three-mile route to honor a family member or friend with arthritis. People with arthritis are encouraged to wear blue hats to signify their action in taking control of their condition. Catch the carp
The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a free Carp Festival on Saturday, May 22 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gray’s Lake. Children ages 16 and under will compete in a free all species fishing contest, and awards will be given for the heaviest stringer and biggest fish caught. Participants over age 16 will compete in a free carp only tournament. Fishing licenses will be available for $19. Registration opens Monday, May 24 for the sixth year of the Des Moines 48 Hours Film Project. Register at www.48hourfilm.com/desmoines. As part of the kickoff, there will be a free public screening on Monday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at the Des Moines Social Club, 1408 Locust St. The screening will showcase the favorite Des Moines 48 Hour Films from the past five years.
