Duck Derby scheduled
The third annual YESS Duck Derby will be held Saturday, May 1 at the Jordan Creek Town Center, 101 Jordan Creek Parkway. Participants can adopt a duck for $5, and the first 10 ducks to cross the finish line win prizes. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. and is a fundraising event benefiting the Youth Emergency Services and Shelters. There will be kid’s activities, entertainment, food, sponsor booths and more. Putt for a hole-in-one
The West Des Moines Leadership Academy will host the “PUTT Your Best FOOD FOREward” miniature golf event on Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the West Glen Town Center (north of Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar). The event will benefit the Des Moines Area Religious Council Pantry and will consist of 24 miniature golf holes. Admission is $5 per person or a donation of five non-perishable food items. Rally at the fairgrounds
The “WE CAN” Rally is set for Sunday, May 2 at the Elwell Family Food Center at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The rally is schedule for 3 to 6 p.m. and will include music, speakers from several hunger ministries, displays and the counting of cans and packages of food. Approximately 40 churches from across central Iowa have collected food items during March and April. For more information, call 984-6274.

 

Take the stage
The Des Moines Metro Opera will perform a preview of “Susannah” on Monday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Library, 1000 Grand Ave. Refreshments and social time will follow performance. Visit www.desmoinesmetroopera.org.

 

Understand special needs
Champions of Autism and ADHD along with Easter Seals will host the “Living, Learning and Understanding Autism and ADHD Conference” on May 6 at Hy-Vee Hall, 730 Third St. The conference runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will focus on training first responders on how to handle a special needs emergency.
