Self-esteem in the head
“We Iowans know who we are. Iowa’s self-esteem isn’t suffering.” I can’t believe Mr. Burns wrote such crap (“Political Mercury,” April 22). Especially when I know better. Iowans are up tight all the time. That’s why they lean on the Iowa football team for identity even while they are more than ready to take money away from university academic programs.

Another reason the Register is losing readership
I buy the Des Moines Sunday Register mostly because I want to see the weekly ads. I buy it at various locations along Ingersoll Avenue. Over the past four or five months, I’ve noticed that it’s missing a lot of the ads. I called them four months ago about it, and they told me that some of the advertisers only pay for certain areas of the town to get the ads. They asked where I bought the paper, and I told them Dahl’s on Ingersoll Avenue. They said it must have been a mistake because that location should have all the ads (apparently the east side doesn’t always get them all). I find it hard to believe that Target or Walgreens would pay for ads to be distributed only in certain areas of the city.
Then several months ago, I called about it again after buying the paper at Walgreens on Ingersoll Avenue, and they again said it was a mistake and sent me four free coupons for the Sunday paper. Last Sunday, I went to Walgreens on Ingersoll Avenue and got the paper, and it had only four ads in it. I called Walgreens and asked them if they take ads out and they said no, they just put out what the paper brings them. I told them it was missing 15 ads including the Walgreens ad, (I know this because I went to my neighbor’s who get the paper delivered and counted the ads they got in their paper). The manager at Walgreens said all the papers there were like the one I got. I will not be buying the paper ever again. I feel I’m getting ripped off! If I pay full price for a paper, shouldn’t I get the same content that others are getting for the same price?
